Bookbinding Part 3 | Encuadernación Round 3

Alright, I admit I skipped a couple of steps here. This is what the book looks like now. I went over the raw leather with 2 colors of shoe polish. First brown and then black. But that awesome effect of black on the raised cords and edges I achieved by brushing over the book with the brush we use to shine our shoes. The tips of the bristles are clean, while the less exposed sections still have some polish on it, so it only blackened the raised parts and not the whole cover. 

Bueno, tengo que admitir que me salteé un par de pasos acá. Así es como quedó el libro. Al cuero "crudo" le pasé por encima con dos tintes de lustre de zapato: marrón y negro. Pero el efecto sobre los cordones y bordes lo logré con el cepillo para lustrar zapatos. Las puntas de las cerdas están limpias, mientras que más adentro del cepillo se ve que aún quedaba pasta y por eso quedaron negras las partes en relieve y no toda la tapa.

Let me show you what I've been up to just recently. I had a bunch of textblocks sitting around, especially a corded one that I'd been meaning to bind but never took the time to. So I did and this is what came out of it. I used fake red croc skin for the covers and spine and the closure was made from some cow's leather I had. I really like the closure that also holds the pen. It's very comfortable to use. I have a feeling it's going to become a classic very soon in my workshop.

Les muestro un poco lo que estuve haciendo últimamente. Tenía varios libros cosidos sin terminar que hace tiempo estaba por encuadernar, especialmente uno con cordones. Y bueno, he aquí el resultado. Usé un resto de piel roja falsa de cocodrilo para las tapas y el lomo y una tirilla de cuero para el cierre. La verdad que quede muy conforme. Y me gusto mucho el sistema de cierre con porta lapicera.

Estas son las instrucciones de armado y los patrones de corte de una de las mantas que hice. Las pueden hacer con telas compradas de colores si lo prefieren. Yo la hice tiñiendo tela blanca con anilinas colibrí. Las instrucciones del teñido tal y como lo hice anteriormente también están en las fichas. El corte para pasar la cabeza lo pueden omitir si quieren una manta común y corriente.

Well, here is the first batch of test cookies for Christmas this season... Noticed that I messed up a little the consistency of the border icing (too stiff). Better luck next time :)

Acá está la tanda siguiente. Para lograr la estrella nevada tienen que hacer el primer bañado, dejarlo secar completamente... qué tan completamente? completamente! por más de que ya tenga la costra hecha, no puede quedar ni un solo poquito de humedad en el baño. Luego hacen el dibujo del copo de nieve con un puntero número 2 y glacé de consistencia media y lo rocían con azúcar, recolectando el que se caiga de las partes secas (si, por eso es tan importante el secado, si no se les pegará azúcar donde no quieren). Y dejenlo secar preferentemente toda la noche.

Listo! Ya tienen hermosas galletitas navideñas :)

Here is the follow-up. To achieve the snowy snowflake cookie you just flood it, let it dry thoroughly then pipe the snowflake on it with medium-consistency royal icing and sprinkle some granulated sugar on it. Collect the sugar that slides off the dry parts. Let cookie dry overnight.

Done! You've got beautiful Christmas cookies!
